Venus Williams’ leg is broken by Rafael Nadal swinging one of the new extra-long tennis rackets into her while demonstrating his service. She is permanently incapacitated.
Twelve months later, Venus was watching the Australian Open on TV. A burglar, undetected, entered Venus’s mansion and shot at Venus, wounding her in the leg. The wound is of such severity that her leg must be amputated. Suppose that:
(1) the alarm company that had installed an alarm system in the mansion was negligent in installing that alarm system.
(2) Venus has not had a chance to bring an action for the first injury; and
(3) the wound from the gunshot was of such severity that it would have been necessary to amputate Venus’s leg in the absence of the break.

Is there a problem here? How do you solve it?
